July 2025, our Chinese children’s ministry, 天国儿童, brought a team to Cambodia to run a children’s camp. It was a short trip—but God used it in ways far beyond what we could have imagined.
One story that captures this impact is about a boy named JJ.
On the first day of camp, JJ stood out immediately—not because he was active or engaged, but because of how withdrawn he was. His face was dark and gloomy. If “gloomy” had a face, it would have been his.
As we got to know him, we learned more about his background. He lived with his grandmother, as his parents were absent. He rarely attended school—only 3 to 4 days a year. Most of his time was spent on his phone, and he had fallen in bad company. His grandmother was deeply concerned, but felt helpless to change his situation.
By what we believe was God’s divine leading, JJ attended the camp.
On the first day, his group leader shared the gospel with him and invited him to receive Jesus. JJ said yes. In the words of his leader, “it was like a ray of sunshine entered him.” From that moment, we began to see a visible change—he started to smile.
What is even more remarkable is that the transformation did not end when the camp ended.
After returning home, JJ began going to school regularly. His demeanor changed—no longer gloomy, but polite and filled with joy. His grandmother saw this transformation and desired what JJ had experienced. She too came to Christ.
Recently, JJ returned to Cambodia for the holidays. During this time, he went to a nearby playground, made new friends, and began inviting them to church. From a withdrawn, school-skipping boy, JJ is now actively reaching out to others.
His grandmother later shared, “Jesus is so good! You must share the gospel with his grandfather—he needs to believe too!”
This story is a powerful reminder: when one life is transformed, it can impact an entire household.
Although the mission trip lasted only a week, its effects continue to bear fruit. Short-term missions may be brief in duration, but they can be catalytic in impact—changing lives, families, and communities.
